Sobriety Isn’t Just Willpower—It’s Strategy

Most guys trying to overcome a bad habit or addiction are stuck in a cycle of guilt, isolation, and willpower burnout. In this episode, we give you a tool that can actually help—a three-circle roadmap that helps you track your triggers, stay grounded, and make progress over time.

The Star Trek Analogy: Red, Yellow, and Green Alerts

Zack breaks it down using a classic Star Trek metaphor:

  • Outer Circle (Green): This is your thriving zone—healthy habits, meaningful relationships, purpose-driven activity
  • Middle Circle (Yellow): Warning zone—triggers, isolation, stress, and habits that increase your risk of relapse
  • Inner Circle (Red): The relapse zone—acting out the very behavior you’re trying to avoid

The key is to live as much as possible in that outer green circle—and to recognize when you’re drifting inward so you can interrupt the spiral.

Step 1: List 10 Healthy Activities

Grab a piece of paper, draw three concentric circles, and start filling in the outer circle with things that help you stay grounded and connected. Ideas include:

  • Exercise
  • Reading Scripture
  • Talking to a friend or mentor
  • Going to a support group
  • Journaling

Pro tip: Circle the top two that give you the biggest return—your personal 80/20 activities.

Step 2: Identify Your Triggers

Use the middle circle to write down the warning signs that you’re drifting toward relapse:

  • Isolation
  • Procrastination
  • Stress or conflict at home
  • H.A.L.T. (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired)

Once you recognize these, you can activate your outer circle strategies and pivot back toward health.

Step 3: Define the Relapse Behavior

This one’s simple but important—name the specific behavior you’re trying to stop. That goes in the center red circle. It helps you stay honest and track progress.

Step 4: Add the “Heroes” Category

This bonus section helps you clarify who you want to become. List men you admire—real or fictional—and write why they inspire you. Then identify:

  • What habits, values, or disciplines do they practice?
  • How can you incorporate those into your outer circle?

This helps connect sobriety to a bigger vision of purpose, calling, and legacy.

Why This Works for Christian Men

You don’t have to be ruled by shame or self-hate. You need a plan, a team, and a reason to fight.

Jesus doesn’t just help us say no to sin—He gives us something better to say yes to. Sobriety is about freedom, restoration, and walking in purpose.
