Wealth, Identity, and the Christian Man: What Really Matters
By Mark Odland, MA, LMFT (in conversation with Zack Carter, Counselor and Coach)
Based on Episode 18 of the Lion Counseling Podcast
What Does It Mean to Be Truly Wealthy?
We live in a world that measures men by their net worth, productivity, and possessions. But what if true wealth is something deeper?
In Episode 18, we dig into the intersection of faith, masculinity, mental health, and money. This conversation is for the man who’s working hard, building a business, grinding it out—but still wonders: “What’s it all for?”
The Lie of the Ledger
Too many Christian men believe that their value is tied to what they earn, provide, or achieve. And while provision is biblical, idolatry of achievement is not.
If your identity is rooted in wealth—or lack of it—you’ll either become arrogant or ashamed. Neither leads to peace.
Redefining Wealth for the Christian Man
We challenge men to consider a new definition of wealth:
- Relational Wealth: Are you investing in your marriage, kids, and friendships?
- Spiritual Wealth: Is your walk with God deepening or drifting?
- Emotional Wealth: Do you have peace? Clarity? Self-control?
- Legacy Wealth: What are you building that will outlive you?
Money Isn’t Evil—But It’s a Terrible Master
Scripture doesn’t condemn money. It condemns the love of money. The constant striving. The illusion that “just a little more” will be enough.
“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?” – Mark 8:36
If your grind is stealing your soul, your family time, or your emotional health—something needs to shift.
The Emotional Toll of the Hustle
In the podcast, we also unpack how many men use work or financial pressure to numb deeper emotions like shame, fear, or inadequacy. Your drive to succeed may not be about money—it may be about not feeling good enough.
This is where therapy and self-awareness matter. You can build both wealth and inner peace—but only if you’re honest with yourself.
Practical Questions for Reflection
- What does success look like for you, beyond the paycheck?
- What are you afraid would happen if you stopped working so hard?
- Are you trying to prove something—or serve someone?
- What does God actually say about your identity?
The Path to Wholeness and Purpose
We want Christian men to thrive—not just in their finances, but in their faith, family, and mental health. Whether you’re building a business, climbing a corporate ladder, or managing a household, your value doesn’t come from the number in your bank account.

Final Encouragement
Real wealth is who you become—not just what you build.
And the good news? You can pursue both—with wisdom, with peace, and with God at the center.
