The Psychology of Weight Loss: Why You’re Stuck and How to Get Unstuck

By Mark Odland, LMFT (based on conversation Zach Carter, Counselor & Coach – Lion Counseling Podcast #23)

Most guys already know what to do to get healthier—eat better, exercise more. But actually following through? That’s a different story.

In this episode of The Lion Counseling Podcast, we take a deeper look at why so many men feel stuck when it comes to weight loss, and how emotional patterns like stress, anxiety, and celebration might be sabotaging your progress without you realizing it.

Food Isn’t Just Fuel—It’s Emotional

Food is often our go-to comfort when life gets overwhelming. Stressed? Anxious? Depressed? The brain craves that dopamine hit. The problem is, if your go-to coping mechanism is pizza, ice cream, or tortilla chips, you might be stuck in a cycle of emotional eating.

Sometimes food also represents more than just comfort. It can symbolize love, reward, or even safety. That late-night snack in front of the TV? It might be less about hunger and more about recreating a memory from childhood where you felt connected and cared for.

Why Willpower Isn’t Enough

Many of our clients come to us asking, “Why can’t I just do what that shredded guy on YouTube says?” The truth is, it’s not about discipline—it’s about the underlying emotional barriers that need to be addressed first.

Using tools from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR, we explore the internal thoughts and beliefs that hold men back from making lasting changes in their health.

Common Thought Traps We See

  • “I deserve this” – as a reward for a stressful week.
  • “I need this” – to cope with anxiety or loneliness.
  • All-or-nothing thinking – “If I can’t eat perfectly or exercise every day, why even try?”

When these beliefs go unchallenged, they sabotage progress from the inside out.

So What Actually Works?

Start small. Build consistency. Track your emotional triggers. And most importantly, get curious—not judgmental—about your habits.

If food helps you feel “safe,” ask yourself: Where did that come from? What need is being met? Then find better ways to meet that need—whether it’s connection, self-respect, or peace.

Faith and Fitness

For many of the men we work with, faith is a crucial part of the journey. Stewarding your body well is an act of obedience and purpose. As Scripture says, “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit… honor God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Final Challenge

This week, pause before your next snack. Ask yourself:

  • What emotion am I feeling right now?
  • What do I really need?
  • Is food the best way to meet that need?
