How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an evidence-based therapy that helps your brain process traumatic or distressing memories that may still be affecting your daily life. Rather than simply managing symptoms, EMDR works to resolve the underlying memories that continue to trigger emotional distress.

Here’s how the process typically works:

1. We identify the root of the problem.
We’ll begin by discussing the experiences, memories, or situations that are causing you distress. This helps me understand where your symptoms are coming from and which memories we should focus on.

2. We prepare you for the process.
Before processing any traumatic memories, I’ll teach you techniques to help you feel calm, grounded, and in control throughout therapy.

3. We begin reprocessing the memory.
Using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds, your brain begins to process the memory in a healthier way. You remain fully awake and in control the entire time.

4. The emotional intensity begins to fade.
As your brain processes the memory, it often becomes less distressing. Most people still remember what happened, but they no longer feel overwhelmed by it.

5. We strengthen healthier beliefs.
Once the emotional charge has reduced, we work on replacing negative beliefs, such as “I’m not safe” or “I’m not good enough,” with healthier, more accurate beliefs that support your healing.

Are You a Good Candidate for EMDR Therapy?

A man wondering if he should go to emdr therapy in Minnesota

Many people assume EMDR therapy is only for those with PTSD, but that’s not the case. I regularly work with clients who are struggling with a wide range of challenges that stem from difficult or distressing life experiences. You may be a good candidate for EMDR therapy if you:

  • Have experienced trauma, whether recent or from childhood
  • Struggle with anxiety, panic attacks, or constant worry
  • Feel stuck because of past experiences
  • Experience flashbacks or intrusive memories
  • Have low self-esteem or negative beliefs about yourself
  • Are grieving a significant loss
  • Find it difficult to move on after a painful event
  • Want to address the root cause of your struggles instead of simply managing the symptoms

If you’re unsure whether EMDR therapy is right for you, I’d be happy to help.

I offer a free consultation where we can discuss what you’re experiencing, answer your questions, and determine whether EMDR is the best approach for your situation. If I believe another form of therapy would better suit your needs, I’ll let you know.

How Many EMDR Sessions Will You Need?

One of the first questions people ask me is, “How many EMDR sessions will I need?” The honest answer is that it depends on your unique circumstances.

Some people experience significant improvement after just 3-4 sessions, particularly if they’re working through a single traumatic event. Others who have experienced childhood trauma, complex PTSD, or multiple difficult life experiences may benefit from a longer course, 7+ sessions of treatment.

The number of sessions can depend on several factors, including:

  • The type of trauma you’ve experienced
  • How long you’ve been struggling with it
  • Whether you’re working through one event or multiple experiences
  • Your personal goals for therapy
  • How your brain responds throughout the healing process

Rather than rushing the process, I focus on helping you achieve lasting results. Throughout therapy, we’ll regularly review your progress and adjust your treatment plan to ensure you’re moving forward at a pace that feels right for you.

In-Person vs Online EMDR Therapy in Minnesota

The good news is that both options can be highly effective, and the right choice often comes down to your personal preferences and lifestyle.

Some people appreciate the comfort of sitting together in the same room, while others find they can relax more easily in the familiar surroundings of their own home. Online EMDR therapy has made it possible for people across Minnesota to access high-quality trauma treatment without the need to travel to Duluth, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules or who live outside the Twin Cities.

Whether we meet in person in Duluth, or through secure telehealth, my approach remains the same. I’ll tailor each session to your individual needs, ensuring you feel safe, supported, and in control throughout the process.

If you’re unsure which option is right for you, I’m happy to discuss both during your free consultation and help you decide which approach best suits your situation.
